A capstan lathe and a turret lathe are both types of lathes used in machining, primarily for
producing identical parts in large numbers, but they have some differences in their designs
and applications. Here's an overview of each:
Capstan Lathe
1. Design: The capstan lathe has a capstan head or turret mounted on a slide, which
moves on the bed of the lathe. This turret can rotate to bring different tools into
position sequentially.
2. Operation: Primarily used for small to medium-sized workpieces and mass
production. The tools are present in the turret, allowing quick and efficient changes
from one operation to the next without needing to reset the tools.
3. Advantages:
○ Faster production as the turret allows for quick tool changes.
○ Ideal for batch production and repetitive operations.
○ Reduced setup time once the turret is loaded with tools.
4. Disadvantages:
○ Limited to lighter work compared to a turret lathe.
○ Generally not as rigid as turret lathes, affecting precision on larger parts.
Turret Lathe
1. Design: Turret lathes have a hexagonal turret mounted on a saddle, which moves
along the bed of the lathe. They also have a tailstock that can hold additional tools or
support longer workpieces.
2. Operation: Used for medium to large-sized workpieces and for operations requiring
heavy cuts. The turret can be indexed to bring any of its mounted tools into working
position, similar to the capstan lathe but typically with more robustness.
3. Advantages:
○ Can handle heavier and larger workpieces compared to capstan lathes.
○ More rigid, providing better precision for complex or heavy-duty tasks.
○ Suitable for both small and large-scale production.
4. Disadvantages:
○ Generally slower setup compared to capstan lathes due to heavier and more
robust design.
○ Requires more power and floor space.
SUMMARY
Both capstan and turret lathes are valuable in manufacturing environments where repetitive,
high-volume production is required. The choice between them depends on the size and
weight of the workpieces, the required precision, and the volume of production. Capstan
lathes are preferable for smaller, faster, and more flexible operations, while turret lathes are
better suited for larger, more rigid, and heavy-duty machining tasks.
